@vivi   IT is right , but I will explain more (spoiler alert) : she always considered Kyle a friend. One day he asked her to marry him and she was saying No because she didn't want to marry and she didn't love him like a lover... all was good here (this was before the things with the duke) 
kYle's father agreed to the marriage and he suggested to send them both to college after marriage... After Uncle Bill convinced lyla... She accepted... after all KYle was her most loved one after her uncle...everthing was good... kyle's mother was agaaaint all of this so did a dirty job to stop leyla from going to college and all and after knowing she is the one who did that...and after she Threatened LEyla to not marry her son ... and everyone knew what happened along with kyle... it was impossible for them to marry...so she broke the engagement... (Leyla never chose the duke over kyle) then kyle went to college alone and all that time the duke didn't leave leyla aloone... one day uncle bill was accused of an accident who dammged the greenhouse of the estate and mathiass's grandmother was hurt and this and that... so he must be punished ... Leyla was breaking down... and the only thing she could do is to beg the duke.. so then he asked her to sleep with him in return.. poor leyla did... for her uncle... and she become his mistress cz he was blackmailing her...he broke her...she become weak and sad.. dirty and she felt like she will never live away from him ( he never let her go away) she HAAATEED HIIMM... now he is falling mooore and mooore for her ( when in the bdtime...he is more affectionate and warm and a very different person) (the scenes are actually beautiful in the novel) there is so many emotions... kyle returned and she told him she will never be with him because now she feels guilty and dirty and everything (literally the girl is destroyed)
