@JustLooking people lack the understanding that he has been battered and pushed his entire life and now this man he knew from Highschool, probably his Highschool sweetheart, comes in and 'saves' him in, providing him food and shelter, he hasn't been treated this well in G** knows how long... so it's completely natural to feel something towards that person.
