Chase said nothing. He just stared at Josh, as if unable to process the words. Josh waited, watching as realization slowly dawned.
Finally, Chase’s gaze drifted toward Peter.
The child’s face was streaked with mud and dust, his little body shaking from crying. He looked different now—like someone Chase was truly seeing for the first time.
After a long pause, Chase finally spoke.
“How old is he?”
It was all he could manage through the flood of thoughts in his mind.
Josh swallowed, his lips trembling.
“When I was guarding you… your Rut came. You don’t remember.”
“Then you—” Chase hesitated, his voice tight. “You slept with me.”
Josh felt like a sinner awaiting judgment. His throat was dry as he watched Chase struggle to process it all. The silence stretched so long it felt like time had stopped.
Then, at last, Chase spoke.
“Did I… force you?”
“No! No!”
Josh immediately shook his head. Seeing the horror creeping into Chase’s face, he repeated himself, voice firm.
“I wanted to. I wanted you. I loved you… That’s why I was with you. There was nothing wrong with that.”
