Comment by Kokoro on Caffeine love - Chapter 15

well I would never comment on living people in this way.
But graficnovels are made for the eye(nd whenever I read romance I love it beautiful). The artist made a clear choice to depict him a bit dumb(for others maybe cute) and not exceptionally handsome. He has all the standard traits of manhwa characters drawn to be "not so hot"/boring. and then he's drawn with the most cartoonish("dumb") expressions. That's what I am referring to, when I say I don't like it.
In contrast there are other artists who draw crazy beautiful characters with glasses to make them "ugly"/nerdy...which I find funny since I love glasses. So, not saying that is better lol
taste is just taste, nothing to deep.
It's two dimensional character we're talking about and style elements... I fail to see where there limits, insecurity and delusional comes in.
I am also very triggered by the "dumb" part..exactly because I dislike the depiction of the "dumb new to love or s** person" trope. Just because you aren't experienced in s** you don't look goofy and stupid. It's quite insulting.
Also I am not criticizing the art style(the artist clearly can draw) but dislike the choice of style elements. They chose to make him look that way, other characters look way less cartoonish/goofy.
side note: this is a site where the author hopefully never comes, because it is pirating their work...much worse than any criticism! and I actually would give the first comment as a critique directly to an artist. It's very clearly stating my taste and not putting in question their ability to draw.
you did actually underhandedly "attack" on a supposedly personal level out of your imagination.
the thing is, I genuinely enjoy the conversations that happen in the comments exactly because of different opinions.
I am sure many people like cartoonish characters that are there for the "cuteness" or for the giggles. But I am sure there's tons of people who read shonen-ai/yaoi/bl drawn usually in the style inspired by bishojo manga, because it's drawn absurdly beautiful, that is one of the basic concept of these genres.
in the end I like wallflower, late bloomer or diamond in the rough stories, but combined with the goofy, slapstick, stupid aspects it's not appealing to me
(And I repeat, I don't talk about faces of living human beings, but drawing styles)
da**. I guess I am not allowed to have a se** younger top BF bc my looks are average like the MC.
You would call me ugly.
Guess what! Some of us actually LIKE that his looks are normal! Sheesh.
Your pretty shallow.
we all look "average" in real life and I enjoy to find the beauty and rawness of that, while at the same time I like the graficnovels I read to be beautiful and tasteful. Not gimmicky.
there exists "normal" looking characters in this genre of graphic novels, that depict them in a tasteful way.
I mean: looking "average" doesn't equal to also making stupid/goofy faces and being a cringe amount of naive.
I find this combination offensive exactly to us "average" human beings. It is reenforcing that beautiful people are more dignified, knowledgeable and overall better.
I questioned myself in the initial comment if this is superficial, but I think through talking to you guys I found where the aversion to this look comes and that's neither shallow nor superficial.
so thank you 🙏
