I agree with you actually not all the stories are realistic but this story is the closest thing I've seen to reality and it's the angst thing that makes the ending happier at least for me, for example if Dan was happy and living with his grandmother and everything was fine, then the story wouldn't even exist, I also liked how you said we should rate the story By the writing styl and character developmentm, and I can't wait to see ML development in the story.
