@NZT in a normal situation of 5 people, he could have become a leader...but not in a group of 20.... nobody in their right mind will select a person they hate or don't trust as their leader...that is plot Armor for you...it would be easier for him to point that they are wrong in their decisions and protect them at the same time...thereby getting trust and then become a leader

@Yomanyo this isn't plot armor because it's a law that makes sense that can be inforced. That the best Knight is to take the lead to protect the imperial family him being that means he leads. Also no other person volunteering for the responsibility of taking care of the imperial princess in a completely unknown area. Where they would be blamed if something were to happened to her. Most people pettiness turns down when their lives are in danger. It the princess choice as well so it had nothing to do with group thoughts. It's later discussed she's willing to trust anyone if it saves the people.
@Yomanyo all the trust he needed to lead came from the princess Co sign on him. And possible consequences if they didn't follow him after she said to.
