The place that Richelieu found was old, burned-out, and connected to many rooms. Looking through those rooms, Richelieu saw a priest taking bribes from other nobles, a priest in a room with many women, and many more hideous things.
His life view was then shattering. Corrupted thoughts then contaminated his mind. It told him that he needed no wisdom of G** or mercy for the people. What he needed was material wealth and an image of virtue in front of the people. It told him that as a priest, he would stand above all and whatever he did to others is just what he blessed them with. Richelieu prayed desperately to g.o.d for the answer and he got one.
He made up his mind and started his plan by finding a trustworthy aide (Wolff - MC’s knight captain friend) to be by his side. To become the greatest light, he wouldn’t trust anyone and he would not put his hand in the darkness of this place. The only way for him to work for the corrupted and still not as tainted is to have Wolff as his mental scapegoat.
Trying to mix into the corrupted people, he felt disgusted by himself that he frequently came to the repentance room to beat himself up and soaked in the holy water. He told himself repeatedly to not be decadent, to not let the corrupted thoughts decay his mind. He endured all of this until the day that he can finally get to the highest position.
