@Introvert you see, the thing is that a horse's leg bones are quite brittle. Don't get me wrong, their bones are really strong, but once they reach a certain level, their bones shatter into small pieces (unlike humans whose bones might bend a bit). Anyways, once its leg is fractured, they can't do anything about it and the horse might never be able to stand, especially since based on the period the story is set in, they don't have our level of medical technology. So the kind thing to do for the horse is to put it out of its misery.

@emperorKevin I know brutal the reality is and I totally agree with your opinion. What I'm mad about is, Joan knows how precious the horse is for Edward because it's his favorite one and the way she abandoned him and left the decision of his life even without consulting the owner of the horse and not involving him in his last moments. 

For example, if a person owns a pet they have cared for all their life and it gets wounded doesn't have long to live, the person would want to spend more time with them and say their goodbyes but here Joan didn't even consider Edward's feelings but likes to take decisions for him.

@Introvert That I agree with. If the horse was so important to Edward, then it should've been his decision.
