We also don't know yet how TJ got his scars, Ian feels really guilty about that. Might be connected with Ian's drug using era. Their relationship hides more things we know about, it's more deep than we can see. They constantly ruined each others life, that's what made Ian tired. (And this gangster life of course.) They want different things in life.
