 We also don't know yet how TJ got his scars, Ian feels really guilty about that. Might be connected with Ian's drug using era. 
Their relationship hides more things we know about, it's more deep than we can see. They constantly ruined each others life, that's what made Ian tired. (And this gangster life of course.) They want different things in life. 

I do think they love each other, it might not be healthy but they're not healthy either, with their traumas and so. 

It's never just black and white, folks!

 Sadly - altough I'm crying my eyes out - I was kinda expected it, for the same reason you just said. The story can't really go on with Gojo in it. :((
