Exactly because what he did doesn't get any excuse, people aren't sympathetic. Because if people start to have compassion on someone like Heiner, who did horrible things to Annette, just because he has a traumatic background, people will also try to justify and rationalize what he did to the point that he get a pass free.
Annette is innocent and Heiner did make her life miserable only because her family, not her, made his life miserable. So he pushed his hate on one person that was innocent but was also the most vulnerable to him. It's basically the backstory of most abusers, who were once abused and now they abuse on someone else.
