@Yomanyo but no one else knows the correct path to take to escape. If he's not leader they have no reason to listen to him. As the person with the most chance of keeping everyone alive he's the best leader they can have. Just because he a little rude doesn't negate his knowledge and skill.

@NZT in a normal situation of 5 people, he could have become a leader...but not in a group of 20.... nobody in their right mind will select a person they hate or don't trust as their leader...that is plot Armor for you...it would be easier for him to point that they are wrong in their decisions and protect them at the same time...thereby getting trust and then become a leader
